Gauri Ganpati Pujan during Ganesh Chaturthi in Maharashtra - Jyeshta Gauri Puja

Jyeshta Gauri Pujan is a three-day Puja is dedicated to Goddess Gauri and Ganpati during the Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapad Month (August – September) in Maharashtra during Ganesh Chaturthi. In 2017, the date of Gauri Ganpati Pujan is August 30. Jyeshta Gauri puja is dedicated to Goddess Mahalakshmi in some regions and in others to Goddess Parvati. Idols of Goddess Gauri are brought to homes and after puja it is immersed in a water body.

The popular belief is that Goddess Gauri visit and resides in homes during the period. Therefore the houses are kept clean and new decorations are added to welcome the Goddess. Special food is also prepared during the period.

The idols of Goddess Gauri which are brought in pairs – two different forms of Gauri – are decorated and special pujas are offered. Women also perform the community puja along with Haldi Kum Kum ceremony.

Goddess Gauri killing a demon is narrated after the puja. The idols are immersed on the third day of the puja in a nearby river or lake.
