Dattatreya Temple At Dattanagar In Himachal Pradesh

The Dattatreya Temple, 8 kms from Nirath towards Rampur in Himachal Pradesh, is located at the centre of Dattanagar village and approached by a steep walk along a narrow lane from the main highway.

The temple is built in the traditional wood and stone style of Himachal Pradesh. An ashtadhatu murti of Dattatreya, a little under 91 cms tall, flanked by the murtis of his parents, Atri and Anasuya, graces the sanctum sanctorum of the temple.

Much of the interior of the temple is dark and dreary; the sculptures on the exterior are stunningly beautiful.

A remarkable sculpture of Lakshmi-Narayana on Garuda, and a bhadramukha of Shiva take pride of place on the wall. The centers of their foreheads and the bridges of their noses are smeared with vermilion; they are worshipped daily with flowers and incense sticks.
