Iripottu Kavu Ayyappa Temple Near Thrithala In Palakkad

Iripottu Kavu Ayyappa temple is located at Mezhathur on Thrithala – Koottanad road in Palakkad district, Kerala. Iripottu Kavu Ayyappa temple main festival is held in Dhanu Masam with Arattu performed on Makaravilakku. The 6-day festival is famous for the participation of 14 caparisoned elephants.

The temple is near Kodanad Shiva temple. The famous Ayurveda family Vaidyamadom is located near the temple.

The main deity worshipped in the temple is Ayyappa. The belief is that an Agnihotri who had retrieved the murti of Parashakti from a whirlpool in Kaveri River had sensed the presence of Ayyappa here and consecrated the murti here. The murti of Ayyappa faces west.

The main Upa Devatas worshipped in the temple are Bhagavathy, Shiva and Ganapathy.

The temple was ransacked and destroyed by Tipu Sultan. The temple was later renovated. The shrine is currently managed by a committee of villagers.
