Thondankulangara Mahadeva Temple – Festival

Thondankulangara Mahadeva temple is located at Thondankulangara in Alappuzha town, Kerala. The temple is dedicated to Mahadev or Shiva. The Maha Shivratri which falls in February or March (Malayalam Kumbha Masam) is an important festival here.

The temple has a chathura sreekovil with an ancient Shivling, which is older than the temple structures. The temple has a namaskara mandapam, pond, chuttambalam and shrines of upa devatas.

The upa devatas worshipped in the temple are Ayyappa on the south Nagaraja on the south west and Subrahmanya on the north and Ganapathy on north east.

The shrine observes Pradosham, Ramayana Masam and Thiruvathira in Dhanu Masam.

The annual Shivratri festival is famous for pujas and rituals both Tantric and Vedic. Melam, ezhunnallathu and folk arts are part of the festival. The temple also observes various other rituals including kalasha pooja and sapthaha yajnam.
