Amavasya is the no moon day in a month in a traditional Hindu lunar calendar. Amavasya September 2022 is the Mahalaya Amavasya and the Pitru Paksha Shradh fortnight ends on the day. Amavasya September 2022 date is September 25. Durga Puja rituals also begin on the day.

As per traditional North Indian calendar it is the Amavasya in Ashwin month. In other regions it is the Bhadrapada Amavasya.

The day is considered highly sacred to perform Shradh rituals and is also known as Sarvapitri Darsha Amavasya.

Amavasya is the darkest day in a traditional Hindu month and is considered both auspicious and inauspicious by different Hindu communities.

There are many Hindus who undertake a fast on Amavasya. Some devotees only take a single meal on the day.

Bhadrapad month ends in traditional calendars followed in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka on the day.

Navratri 2022 begins from the day after Amavasya (September 26).
